My name is Syeda Umme Hani.  I came to Mahaveer Jain Hospital on May 6th 2013, because I was suffering from a condition called Posterior Circulation Stroke. Basically, that means partial paralysis (i.e. stiffness in hand and leg because of which I could not move myself).  It also affected my speech.  Because I have stiffness in my legs, my balance is very poor.

As a result of my condition, I had to quit my job. I find it challenging to do everyday tasks.  I can do them it just takes me a lot longer because of the stiffness and unbalance .It is difficult for me to walk on uneven surfaces.

I have been to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy at neuro rehabilitation . I had a tracheostomy done and a peg tube. Within the first 1 ½ months I was just able to stand.

I have had a lot of relief in my muscle stiffness by physical therapy.  My balance has also improved.  I still fall, but not nearly as much as I used to.  I have gained more confidence to go places alone because I am not as fearful of falling.  I seem to be more joyful having something that has had a healing effect on me.

I   had a lot of improvements’ due to speech and occupational  therapy.

Coming into the clinic gives me a sense of peace.  Everyone is very caring and positive and they take the time to get to know their patients personally. I definitely have a long healing journey ahead of me but I see a lot of change in my behavior ( I had emotional liability problem). I believe you have to stay positive and full of faith and hope.

DOCTORS CASE STUDY:

This is a story from 2015-16.

This young healthy lady of 23 years, who had just joined a job to support her family, suddenly complained of headache, vomited and became unconscious. She was immediately rushed to a local hospital where she was evaluated, and MRI Brain revealed that she has had a massive brainstem stroke (infarct involving the entire pons). MR angiogram revealed that the entire Basilar Artery (BA) was blocked or occluded! She was deeply in coma and with a GCS of 5T/15. She had dysconjugate eye movements and a left hemiplegia. She was then moved (within 24 hours of the stroke) to Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Vasanth nagar, Bengaluru, India.

In view of such critical and major findings on the MRI, a very poor prognosis was explained to her family, but they didn’t want to give up. This never-give-up attitude was inspiring even for the doctors at BMJH and team newro and intensive multi-disciplinary neuro rehabilitation was initiated. WUUB protocol for coma stimulation, passive limb physiotherapy, to keep the body future ready and the VOST protocol to prevent aspiration pneumonia. She underwent a tracheostomy and a PEG for feeding.

Over the next 6 months – 2 months as an in-patient and 4 months as an out-patient, undergoing the specialized, patented rehab protocols at newro, she made a dramatic improvement, and she is now near normal! These are her videos.
